Prague

what summer houses must have
Spring here over the centuries
for all it's backwardness,
Prague puts many cities to shame.
despite these virtues,
it proves to be an old old city.

such is the iridescent power of age.

returned, this afternoon,
from Karlovy Vary by bus
stemming the flow and tide of longing.

that, she said, was enough
to live on for a month.

a cat?
the catalyst?
seems wrong, somehow,
to be blaming all our best
moments on our pets.
I will be the person first
blown away by the statue.

monuments were never my style,
although I've seen
many a great composer.
now we both can rest.
the gates swing closed, and
my hunger pains return

somewhere outside music begins.
two men get into
their circus clown small car
and drive home.
music stops magically.

soon Prague will drift away.
difficult countries are those
where the people don't smile
and ignore you if you don't
speak the language.
