Budapest

hotter than August sun under
Budapest moon
who closed the window? me.
great. cold coming on is not
what a traveler needs;
perhaps a long soak in the
royal baths to cure
something picked up in the
labyrinthine corridors under the
emperor's grand palace.
did he know they were there?
did any emperor know their
trillion dollar home and political
estate would one day be turned into
some raging tourist Roach Motel
where the rubber-shod peasants they
ruled would pay to see the very
place they crapped?
not so the labyrinth
from below the imperial
bootstraps where a few hundred
worthless frankfurters allows
one to explore the corridors
of mystery see the bends of
inner though find the ego in
sticky slimy water slick
cobblestones and gaslight lamps
quirky rooms of low-ceilinged
vanity and hidden fears
that might send you screaming
back for forgiveness from
her royal highness and rush
in a barking new renaissance
