from the Southland
   another small reminder of other
worlds that circle my
   dark little sun

no pressure—just checking in
   on our little project
another victim of
     the cross world connection

On the same day
   a call from the north
much closer
   a world of civilized barbarity
      and I am pulled north

   let's reflect on what's
      interesting and gloss over
   what's not with a plastic
     smile

today is my sister's birthday
   I have the perfect card for her
I just haven't mailed it,
     so typical  of me
   but atypical to  buy one

the heat reaches its peak in Tucson
   about this time of year,
baking the sidewalk, asphalt,
      houses, the only true survivor
   is the cacti
      who cannot imagine
     a world without heat
