Introduction

All poems were written in Santa Barbara, CA.

This is my fourth year participating in the 3:15 Experiment. I was not sure that I would take the challenge this year of interrupting my sleep. For a variety of reasons I felt this and for a variety of reasons I decided to do it.

Certain themes seem to return continually. There is an underlying struggle as well as a contentment and even a bit of humor in the end. This past summer I attended Naropa University's Summer Writing Program for the fourth time. I was feeling particularly motivated to write after this, and writing keeps coming back to a kind of excavation. There is a natural entwining between a physical experience of life and something less graspable, less definable.

So there it is.
