first full day back
everything too too much back to normal
same books   waiting to be read
same clothes   that need mending
same broken appliances
same dustbunnies
same problem children
walking past midnight
not to be arrested
same clothes   waiting to be dumped
waiting for the fashion police
to liberate
same foul yard   needing weeding
same staircase   waiting for a banister
same websites   waiting for polish
same woodwork   wanting paint removal
same freakin' cat—
oh wait, he's cool
same stupid food
same dishes   unwashed before I left
same dismal situation—
so what's different?
my indifference carries a new
attitude   bent by something
not native to this country,
foreign to this house   this life
causing it to tremble
and fear for its very existence
