Sitka, Alaska

I wonder
if starfish suffer from insomnia,
waking up
with dull pain in their tentacles
in the middle of the night…
stretching,
only to find
their spouses
had taken all the space
under the rock…
realizing
a grain of sand
had caused a whole lot
of discomfort
in their nether regions…
wondering if
it would rain
the next morning,
as their arthritic tentacle tips throbbed
with painful stiffness,
curved
in most contorted ways.

I wonder
how steady pitter-patter of midnight rain
sounds
on the bottom of the sea…
I wonder
if ocean welcomes
its sweet water drops
like long-lost family,
sisters adopted at birth
long,
long time ago…

I wonder
if shoreside grasses
sing
in the shower,
lifting their voices
as they blissfully sway
just before dawn…

I wonder
what secrets
midnight may keep
from her sister noon…

I wonder
what tales
summer would tell
as it returns
from its travels
to rest once more
in this quaint spot.
